LEVIES The bacteriological test - anaerobic

LEVIES FOR THE BACTERIOLOGICAL EXAMINATION - anaerobic bacteria

obligate anaerobes are frequently involved in infections, but are often "lost" in the course of bacteriological diagnosis, unless special precautions are taken for the procurement and for the transport to the laboratory.
Since contaminants may be easily confused with the pathogen, samples should not be contaminated with normal flora.
For this reason, if tampons are made from skin lesions is important not to touch the areas surrounding the damaged area populated by a normal commensal microbial flora.
The following samples are free of contamination and can be cultivated directly: pleural fluid, trans-tracheal suction material, pus obtained by direct suction to suck on bone and tissue biopsies from normally sterile.
When sampling fluid with a needle and syringe must expel air from the syringe needle and then fold in on itself or plug it, fixing them in a sterile rubber stopper, thus avoiding the air enters the syringe.
A brief exposure to it can kill some of the demanding anaerobic microorganisms, such as those found in lung infections, although more virulent anaerobic species are quite tolerant to oxygen.
transport to the laboratory must be rapid, a delay may cause an increase mainly of aerobic bacteria that can cause failure to present identification of anaerobes.
In case of doubt it is always best to contact the laboratory prior to the pre-analytical procedures and test materials and methods. Dr Stephen
